A voice, a bass viol and a harpsichord: these are the tools of entertainment for the music lovers who live in the beautiful mansions of the Marais and the Île Saint-Louis; those new districts of Paris which flourished in the 17th century. Thus, they could delight in the pièces de viole by Marin Marais with their evocative names— or perhaps in the court songs, severe or light, of Michel Lambert or Marc-Antoine Charpentier, delicately evoking love in all its various facets. In these pieces, listeners could doubtless recognize their own pangs of love, musically rendered in the most gallant fashion…
